Fol. 9r

The flight of Leonardo In this page Leonardo analyses the use of the wings to avoid being overturned by the wind, both when its thrust arrives from above and from below. He observes how the kite reduces the open portion of the wing, thus reducing resistance.
The pilot must adopt the same strategy with the future flying machine.

(When the wind strikes the bird underneath the body, with its centre of gravity towards the wind itself, then the bird will turn with its back to the wind, and when the wind is stronger from below than from above, then the bird will turn upside down unless it takes care immediately to fold the wing below and extend the wing above; in this way it will straighten out and return to the position of equilibrium.)

NOTE. For each page of Leonardo’s Codex we provide a brief summary, with the quotation of one that page’s most significant passages edited in modern Italian, with an English translation.
